Laura Newton Ruff

Current Rank: Brown belt

Coach Laura joined the RockStar family back in November of 2016 as an assistant coach. Originally from Mexico, but moved to the states at an early age growing up locally here in Texas. Alongside her husband, Josh Ruff, they operate and manage our RockStar Prosper location.

She started her martial arts career in January, 2009 and began to focus more on the study of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in May 2012. Her background includes, Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling.

Coach Laura believes the study of Jiu-Jitsu to be beneficial to any student because it truly addresses the size of the student is not important but the technique and how its applied. In addition to size, and technique, the intensity and aggression used can be a very important factor in the process. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the only martial arts where she is confident a person of a smaller size can actually defend themselves against someone bigger.

When not doing Jiu-Jitsu, she enjoys hiking, rock climbing and spending her time outdoors and with her husband.

“We are very much a family environment and we want to be a type of environment that welcomes any type of person to train, not just competitors. Not just people that are just athletes. We want the mom’s, dad’s, grandma’s, the sisters, and brothers too. We are a nurturing family.

Everyone should be learning something to stay hopeful. Be a student to something always.”
